Welcome to Jakarta! The place with an incredible choice of vegan and vegetarian restaurants. Take a look at my top 10 picks for the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Jakarta.

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting the International Vegan Carnaval 2023 in Jakarta, organised by The World Vegan Organization (WVO). The Vegan Carnaval took place at the Pluit Village Mall.

I must say, while I haven’t been to many vegan festivals, Vegan Carnaval in Jakarta has set the bar very high. From incredible entertainment and educational talks to impeccable food, it’s a celebration of pure fun.

Having the chance to try out so many different foods, I compiled a list of my favourite vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Jakarta.

Top 10 best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Jakarta

  1. Rumah Juliet
  2. Pranita Rasa
  3. Love, Merci
  4. Dharma Kitchen
  5. Loving Hut
  6. Green Inc.
  7. Bamboe Ceria
  8. Madametin
  9. Ivegan Pizza
  10. Vegetus

#1 Rumah Juliet

Rumah Juliet is a charming vegan bakery cafe located in Jakarta, offering an array of delectable vegan and gluten-free pastries, cakes, cookies, and an assortment of other vegan dishes, including authentic Indonesian cuisine and Italian pasta dishes.

In addition to its delightful food selection, Rumah Juliet also offers an exceptional range of premium teas, vegan hot chocolate, and beautifully crafted vegan lattes.

During my visit, I enjoyed sampling various dishes, such as the vegan bakso Jamur soup and Mala Tang Noodle. The vegan mango tart, vegan doughnuts in flavours like tiramisu and cinnamon, pandan salted caramel cake, hot chocolate, rosebud tea, and their current speciality, the vegan watermelon mojito cake, were also highlights of my experience.

Rumah Juliet is inspired by the movie ‘Letters to Juliet,’ and you’ll find charming movie-inspired details scattered throughout the cafe.

#2 Pranita Rasa

Pranita Rasa is a vegan, family-owned, restaurant in Jakarta that specialises in traditional Indonesian food. The restaurant was established in 2004, which counts 19 years of serving delicious food. Isn’t that incredible?

Pranita Rasa offers buffet-style vegan food and different packages. For example;

Package A = Rice + 3 Veggies

Package B = Rice + 3 veggies + 1 protein

This gives you the option to try their homemade vegan jerky, chilli tempeh, vegan rendang and so much more, at once.

In addition to offering traditional Indonesian cuisine, Pranita Rasa features a selection of vegan burgers and hot dogs. The OG Chick’n burger, Smokey BBQ burger, and Mentai hotdog represent delectable fast food adaptations of classic meals.

The welcoming atmosphere at Pranita Rasa and its incredible food make it a great choice for those looking to enjoy a satisfying and cruelty-free taste of Indonesia’s culinary heritage.

#3 Love, Merci

Love Merci stood out as one of my favourite stalls at the Jakarta International Vegan Carnaval 2023. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit their bakery and pastry shop, currently located near Chinatown Jakarta.

The pastry shop offers some of the best vegan croissants I’ve ever tasted, surpassing my experiences in London, Paris, Croatia, and Bali. Their menu includes plain vegan croissants, tuna melt, popcorn croissants, Khachapuri with a vegan egg yolk made of cashew cheese and pumpkin, vegan French toast, croissant wheels with gold leaves, vegan pain au chocolat, and much more.

Love Merci is a fully vegan pastry shop in Jakarta owned by a delightful couple whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person. They craft all their pastries in-house, ensuring consistently fresh and delightful products.

#4 Dharma Kitchen

Dharma Kitchen is one of many vegetarian restaurants in Jakarta renowned for its exceptional vegan offerings, spanning Asian and Indonesian cuisines. Notable vegan specialities include tofu and nori-based vegan fish, vegan satay, savoury turnip cake, and Kailan (Chinese broccoli).

In addition to its restaurant offerings, Dharma Kitchen features a shop where you can purchase vegetarian cakes and a variety of frozen vegan and vegetarian food. One intriguing find at the shop was a vegan fish shaped remarkably like a real fish. While the uncanny resemblance left me uncertain about my feelings, it reflects the positive trend of expanding vegan options in Jakarta

#5 Loving Hut

Loving Hut is a chain of vegan restaurants in Jakarta in which each restaurant is owned and operated independently. Each restaurant also sets its own menu. Loving Hut has restaurants all over the world, from Africa, Asia and Europe to South America, North America, and Oceania. The chain has over 200 locations in 35 countries.

I had a couple of vegan dishes at the Loving Hut Express restaurant in Jakarta and everything was tasty and delicious. The restaurant has a menu but also buffet-style dishes.

My favourite was, yet another Bakso soup and Emie Medan.

How to Travel as A Vegan?

#6 Green Inc.

Green Inc, a completely vegan restaurant situated in Jakarta, was one of my preferred stalls at the International Vegan Carnaval Jakarta 2023.

Their vegan Laksa Singapore, featuring tofu pieces, tofu skin, and vermicelli noodles, was incredibly flavourful with just the right amount of spice for my taste. I’ve tried Laksa soups in Bali and Singapore before, but they were either overly spicy or lacking in flavour. Green Inc also offers Pho Soup Vietnam. If you happen to be in the vicinity of their restaurant, I highly recommend trying either of these two dishes

#7 Bamboe Ceria

Bamboe Ceria stands as a vegetarian restaurant located in West Jakarta, providing not just vegetarian but also outstanding vegan choices. Specialising in authentic Indonesian vegan cuisine, the dishes are impressively flavourful and indulgent, making it a place worth revisiting.

Among the delightful vegan offerings is Rames Tumpeng, an Indonesian cone-shaped rice dish usually accompanied by meat-based sides, but here, featuring tempeh, tofu, or tofu skin. The menu also includes other enticing vegan dishes such as Mie Bakso (Indonesian noodle soup), Mie Siam, He Mia, and a variety of other tempting options.

Fully vegan: No

#8 Madametin

My ultimate Indonesian vegan dish has to be Bakso soup, and Madamentin serves one of the finest, if not the very best, Bakso soups I’ve ever tasted.

Bakso soup is a traditional Indonesian street dish typically made with meatballs in a rich clear broth. Various versions include vegetables, noodles, and even tofu.

Madametin is a vegan restaurant located in central Jakarta. It offers delicious and flavourful vegan Bakso soups, including Cheesy Meatballs (Bakso keju Vegan), Cone-shaped Meatballs (Bakso Kerucut), Spicy Meatballs (Bakso Mercon), as well as a vegan sushi set, onigiri, homemade curly noodles, and much more.

#9 iVegan Pizza

ivegan Pizza is the first vegan pizza restaurant in Indonesia and it was founded in 2016 by Yogen Marshel Wijaya and Diana Marcillia.

The restaurant currently has two locations in Jakarta – one in Tangerang (The western border of Jakarta) and the other one in South Jakarta.

I think it’s uncommon to come across a delicious vegan pizza these days. The distinctive flavours in traditional pizza usually come from the saltiness of the cheese or the processed meat. Creating a vegan alternative can be challenging, but IVegan has absolutely mastered it. From the soft and wonderfully tasty dough to the incredible and flavourful toppings, they’ve got it spot-on.

I tried their Smoked pizza and also a slice of Mushroom ham pizza.

#10 Vegetus

Vegetus Jakarta is a vegetarian restaurant that also features delightful vegan dishes on its menu.

The menu is extensive, and with the assistance of Vegetus staff, you can experience some of the finest vegan dishes in the area.

I sampled a few dishes, including Baso Kuah (vegan meatball soup), Babi Panggang (vegan pork), Sate Padang (vegan chicken skewers), and Brokoli Cah Ham (broccoli and vegan ham). The only dish that didn’t quite suit my taste was the vegan pork. Don’t get me wrong—the flavour was spectacular, but the uncanny resemblance to real pork was a bit much for my liking.

Exploring Jakarta’s vibrant vegan scene has been a rewarding experience, with standout moments at the International Vegan Carnaval Festival 2023. From insightful education to delightful entertainment, the festival provided a perfect blend of fun, tasty food, and the chance to connect with amazing individuals who share a passion for cruelty-free living.

As I conclude this culinary journey, the memories of exceptional vegan restaurants and the vibrant energy of the Vegan Carnaval will linger as a testament to Jakarta’s thriving plant-based community.
