If you are looking for local and authentic Indonesian food in Bali, I am sharing the Top 11 vegan-friendly warungs to make your journey easier.
I’ve been in Bali for quite some time now, and after trying most of the Western vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants, I wanted to shed some light on authentic and local restaurants called Warungs.
If you still want to try Western vegan restaurants in Ubud, check out my list of the Top 10 best vegan-friendly restaurants in Ubud and the Best vegan sushi in Ubud.
You will notice some of the warungs on my list have ‘Vegetarian’ in their name, but rest assured, they do cater to vegans, and many don’t serve any animal products whatsoever.
What are Warungs?
Warungs in Bali, Indonesia, are small family-owned businesses. From simple roadside stalls to small restaurants or even part of someone’s home, They serve as convenient and budget-friendly spots for locals and tourists to grab a quick, affordable meal.
The food is typically homemade, reflecting authentic local flavours. It is usually fresh, with ingredients often sourced from local markets.
Warungs offer traditional Indonesian and Balinese dishes, most of which can be made vegan. Instead of meat, you would get tofu, tempeh or even soy.
Some of the traditional dishes that you can find in warungs are:
- Nasi Goreng: Fried rice with vegetables, meat, and a fried egg.
- Mie Goreng: Fried noodles.
- Satay (Sate): Skewered and grilled meat, often served with a peanut sauce.
- Babi Guling: Balinese-style roast pork.
- Nasi Campur: A rice mix with various side dishes like vegetables, meat, and sambal.
- Gado-Gado: A salad of boiled vegetables served with peanut sauce.
- Lawar: A traditional mix of vegetables, coconut, and minced meat.
One more thing I would like to mention is don’t let the look of the place scare you. The most delicious food is served in places that don’t look aesthetically pleasing. Some might even “scare” you away at first, but focus on the food 🙂
Now that you know what Warungs are, let’s check out my list

Sai Prema Warung
Sai Prema Warung is located in Ubud, surrounded by rice fields on both sides of the restaurants. Although labelled as vegetarian, the majority of the menu is vegan. The restaurant serves delicious vegan bakso soup (traditional Indonesian meatball soup), vegan Nasi Campur, Nasi goreng, refreshing iced tea, and jamu. Sai Prema is a family-owned business located North of Ubud, towards the Teggalalang rice terraces. The prices are very affordable. I’m talking a pound / euro or so for a meal.
9 Angels
9 Angels restaurant is a vegan-friendly warung that operates on a self-service and honour system. You serve yourself from a buffet-style selection of traditional Indonesian dishes, leave the money in a glass bottle and wash your dishes. Quite cool, right?
This vegan warung uses local, organic ingredients whenever possible. The decor is often crafted from recycled materials, contributing to an eco-friendly environment.
The restaurant was fully vegan before recently deciding to include eggs. Hopefully, they will change their mind again.
Top 10 Best Vegan-friendly Restaurants in Ubud
Prima Pure Vegetarian
Prima Pure is a vegan restaurant in the heart of Ubud, in the Penestanan area. The restaurant serves one of the best vegan Nasi Campur in Ubud (in my opinion.) This is the only dish they offer, alongside pumpkin soup and a dessert (usually a cupcake). Nasi campur is on the spicier side, so if you are not a fan of spicy food, you might want to skip Prima Pure.
Warung Green 2
Warung Green has two restaurants in Ubud: Warung Green One (Lotunduh area) and Warung Green Two (Mas area). This buffet-style vegan restaurant offers plenty of vegan food options. You pay per scoop, and the price ranges from 7-15k IDR (£0.35//€0.41 – £0.75//€0.90). They also provide amazing vegan desserts, ginger tea, kombucha, and jamu.
The buffet food gets refilled frequently, but if you find an empty tray, ask the staff to replenish the trays.
Siboghana Warung
Siboghana is a fully vegan warung in Ubud that serves very affordable vegan dishes. Although it is labelled vegetarian, you can rest assured that the dishes are vegan. Therefore, you can find vegan Nasi campur and nasi goreng, vegetable soups, noodles, curries, fried mushrooms, and a great Indonesian dessert—pisang goreng—fried bananas.
Vegetarian Maharani
Vegetarian Maharani is another vegan-friendly warung near Ubud, and it has the kindest staff who prepare and serve your food. The restaurant is about 20 minutes drive from Ubud, but it is worth it.
The last time I was there, I was offered a complimentary soursop juice, which absolutely made my evening. The food is very simple, and the portions are not big but substantial. I often order vegan bakso soup and vegan nasi campur.
The prices are affordable – you can get two dishes for a third of the cost in any other Western restaurant.
Minang Vegan
Minang Vegan is a fully vegan Warung in Ubud. The restaurant has quite an extensive menu for a warung, and the portions will leave you more than satisfied. The only downside is the food is on the greasier side but it doesn’t compromise on the taste.
Sawobali
Sawobali is a fully vegan buffet in the heart of Ubud. The menu is mostly the same every day and you can find a good variety of dishes. The restaurant serves hearty stews, curries, fried mushrooms, tempeh and tofu dishes, noodles, roast potatoes, soups, fresh salads, and Indonesian desserts. The price for eating in is 70k IDR (£3.40 // €4) per person. This includes unlimited food, desserts of the day and fresh water.
Teratai Vegetarian
Teratai is a vegan warung in Ubud similar to Sawobali and Warung Green. It is also a buffet restaurant. Teratai is located near the big supermarket Bintang in Ubud.
The restaurant is quite small, but the food is tasty, and the staff is incredibly kind. You can find dishes such as yellow curry, vegan sushi, stir-fried noodles, sauteed veggies, etc. If you are not offered on arrival, you can ask for miso soup, which is included in the price: 60k IDR (£2.90 // €3.40) for all you can eat.
Warung Masakan Ibu
Masakan Ibu is a restaurant that offers vegan options but is not fully vegan. The staff is very friendly and will accommodate your request. I tried their vegan Nasi Campur, and it satisfied my needs. The restaurant sometimes closes earlier than its closing time, so maybe visit during the day or early afternoon.
In da Compound
In da Compound classifies as a warung, but I would say it’s on a ‘higher end’. It’s located on Gautama Street (a famous street in Ubud) but hidden behind the white bunnies. Yup, you read that right. Once you enter, you will be surrounded by guest houses that have white bunnies hopping around. Once you manage to escape the cuteness, you will eventually reach the restaurant.
The setting is beautiful. There is a part where you can sit on the floor and enjoy the food in a secluded area or choose a regular table and chair.
In da compound serves delicious vegan nasi campur, yellow curry, vegetable soup, vegan satee, and more.
