Here’s your guide to a heartwarming and cruelty-free Vegan Christmas.
As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to the warmth of festive gatherings, the joy of giving, and the indulgence of delightful treats. This Christmas, consider embracing a compassionate and sustainable approach by making your celebrations vegan-friendly.
From the scrumptious delights on the dinner table to thoughtful gifts, refreshing drinks, and an eco-friendly Christmas tree, here’s your guide to a heartwarming and cruelty-free Vegan Christmas.
Vegan Food – What do Vegans Eat for Christmas?
The centrepiece of any Christmas celebration is undoubtedly the feast laid out on the table. Contrary to the misconception that a vegan spread lacks variety, a Vegan Christmas menu can be diverse, flavourful, and satisfying.
Start your Christmas lunch or dinner with stuffed mushrooms, vegan cheese platters, and roasted vegetable skewers. Move on to the main course, featuring hearty dishes like lentil or nut roast, the famous vegan Wellington made of flavorful mushrooms, nuts or lentils.
Throw in some vegan cranberry sauce, vegan pigs in blankets, beautiful roasted Brussels sprouts, roasted carrots, parsnips, squash and end the night with vegan Christmas cookies, vegan Christmas pudding and vegan mulled wine. The list is endless, and there is absolutely no need to feel excluded.
Christmas is a significant time of the year for many people, and if you have recently transitioned to a vegan diet, it may feel challenging and restrictive, especially since the main celebration revolves around food. Fortunately, with the abundance of Christmas vegan recipes available, you can enjoy a truly festive vegan feast

Serve up a creamy and spiced vegan eggnog made with almond or coconut milk, and consider adding a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg for that extra festive touch.

Vegan at a Christmas Gathering
If you have been vegan for some time now, or if you have recently transitioned, you’re likely familiar with the challenges of addressing questions about your lifestyle and vegan diet, especially when gathered with family and friends at the same table.
The key advice is to stay calm. I know it’s easier said than done, but trust me on this. Some people are genuinely curious, while others may seize the opportunity to provoke.
My primary recommendation is to educate yourself on all the facts about the vegan lifestyle and nutrition (I’ll include some useful links below) and not to take it too seriously. If you find yourself getting annoyed, politely share your opinions or let the other party know that this is not the time or place to continue the conversation. Assure them that you would be more than happy to explain your lifestyle at another time.
Another challenge may arise if you have been invited to lunch or dinner, but your friends or family find it challenging to provide vegan food for you. Consider offering to bring your own (BYO) dish or recommend a couple of recipes that can be prepared for you.
Vegan Christmas Gift Ideas
Gift-giving is a cherished tradition during the holidays, and choosing presents that align with the values of compassion and sustainability can make the season even more special.
But it can also be a bit overwhelming as vegans do have different lifestyle choices. Vegans do not consume, wear or use any animal products or by-products.
What to pay attention to when buying a gift for a vegan?
- Leather and Fur
- Feathers
- Silk & Wool
- Beeswax
- Beauty products tested on animals
- Entertainment that includes animal exploitation
Leather and Fur – bags, shoes, trainers, scarf, hats
Feathers – jackets, duvets, pillows
Silk & Wool – Scarf, hats, gloves, jumpers
Beeswax – I believe everyone would agree that one of the most common Christmas gifts is candles. Many candles available in shops are made with beeswax, so consider asking the staff if they offer soy wax candles instead.
Beauty products tested on animals – a lot of high street beauty brands test on animals, such as L’Oréal, Maybelline, MAC cosmetics, Maxfactor, OPI. (Find the full list by PETA here.)
To make your search easier, look for a leaping bunny sign on a product or simply Google if a certain brand tests on animals or not.
Note: Cruelty-free and vegan are not always the same thing. If a product is labelled vegan it is automatically cruelty free. But if the product is labelled cruelty-free, it can still contain animal byproducts (beeswax, gelatine, etc.) Read more about hidden non-vegan ingredients.
What can you give to a vegan as a gift?
Consider gifting plant-based cookbooks, beauty products, handmade vegan treats, and event tickets, or simply donate to their favourite animal charity or sanctuary.
Explore sustainable and ethical brands for accessories, clothing, or household items. Subscription services for vegan snacks, meal kits, or cruelty-free products can also make for thoughtful and practical gifts.
Sustainable Christmas Tree
Decorating the Christmas tree is a tradition that sets the festive tone for your home. This year, make a conscious effort to choose sustainable and eco-friendly decorations.
Consider opting for a live tree that can be replanted after the holidays or invest in a reusable artificial tree. Decorate with ornaments made from recycled materials, or get creative with do-it-yourself crafts using items found around the house. Embrace energy-efficient LED lights to minimise your environmental footprint.
Summary – Vegan Christmas
A Vegan Christmas isn’t just about the absence of animal products; it’s a celebration of abundance, thoughtfulness, and sustainability. From the mouthwatering vegan Christmas food on the dinner table to the eco-friendly Christmas tree adorned with care, each choice you make can contribute to a more compassionate and planet-friendly holiday season.
So, gather your loved ones, savour the flavours of vegan delights, exchange thoughtful gifts, and create lasting memories that reflect the true essence of a Vegan Christmas.
